Create Recordings with Panopto Recorder (How-to)

This document will walk you through the installation and use of the Panopto Recorder for Windows or Mac.


1. Installing Panopto

This step will only need to be completed once. If you have already installed Panopto, please skip to Part 2.

1. Log into Blackboard and navigate to your course.

2. Select the Panopto link from the course menu.

3. Select the Record a new session link under the green Create drop-down menu.

4. Select the Download Panopto button from the drop-down menu.

5. Once downloaded, run the Installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

NOTE: The default installation of the Panopto Recorder for Mac conflicts with the University's setup of OneDrive on Drake-owned Mac devices. As a result, recordings created with Panopto will not upload correctly when completed. To resolve this issue, Mac users should follow the Correcting the Panopto Upload Issue for Mac (How-to) instructions before performing their first recording.


2. Recording a new session

1. Log into Blackboard and navigate to your course.

2. Select the Panopto link from the course menu.

3. Select the Record a new session link under the green Create drop-down menu.

  1. Select the Open Panopto button from the drop-down menu.


3. Configuring a Panopto Recording

There are two types of audio and video sources in Panopto, Primary and Secondary. Primary sources include microphones, webcams, and external cameras. Secondary sources include PowerPoint presentations, screen captures, and other non-audio sources. You must have a Primary source to create a Panopto recording. Secondary sources are optional.

1. Name your Session.

2. Select Primary Source. These are typically webcams and internal microphones. You must have a Primary source to record in Panopto.

3. Select Secondary Source (optional). These can be either a screen capture or a presentation software such as PowerPoint or Keynote.

4. Creating a Panopto Session

After configuring the correct Primary and Secondary sources, you can being your recording session.

1. Select the red Record button.

2. If needed, you may Pause and Resume the recording as needed.

3. When you are finished, Stop the recording. You can Rename the session if needed. Otherwise select the Upload button to complete the session.

4. The session will then Upload to the Panopto server. NOTE: You can create additional recordings, but allow the sessions to Finish Uploading before closing the program.
