Create Recordings using the Panopto Application (How-to)

These instructions describe how to record a video with the Panopto Application on Mac or Windows. This article will cover all aspects of recording a video with one computer using audio and video as well as presentation content (Powerpoint, Keynote, screen capture, or additional cameras.)

1. Starting a New Recording

1. Open the Panopto folder from within your course

  1. Begin by going to the course you would like to record into.
  2. Click on the Panopto Course Folder.
  3. In the center of the browser window, click on the + Create button and then select Panopto for Mac/Windows.

  4. Depending on your browser setting, a window may appear that prompts you to select Open Panopto to launch the recorder or to download the application if you haven't already done so.

2. Creating a New Recording 

  1. Click on Create New Recording.
  2. Name your recording. By default all recordings will be names with a time and date stamp. This can be changed before or after recording if desired.
  3. Select the appropriate course folder to submit the video. If you began the process from within your Blackboard course, the course folder will be selected by default.

3. Selecting Sources

  1. Choose which audio, video, and/or screen capture sources you wish to record. This will vary depending on your computer and installed hardware.
  2. Choose if you would like to record a Powerpoint or Keynote presentation.

4. Starting, Stopping, and Pausing. 

  1. You can now begin recording. Click on the red RECORD icon. Once your recording has started, that icon will change into PAUSE and STOP.
  2. When you have finished recording, click STOP to stop the recording. You will have the option to upload the recording or delete it and start again.
  3. Click the PAUSE button to have a section of your recording automatically edited out. When the recording is paused, Panopto is continuing to record, but that section will be edited out of the final version. You can always get this content back by using the editor.

6. Manage Recordings

  1. Once everything has been recorded and you have stopped your recording, you will be taken to the Manage Recordings window
  2. The Manage Recordings window displays the recordings stored on your computer as well as the processing status of your recordings. You can also watch a preview of your video in the bottom right-hand corner, even while it is uploading.
  3. If you are making the recording on a classroom computer, you will see recordings made by others using the application.

7. Share Recordings

  1. Instructor-created content will automatically be available in the Ultra Version Panopto Video Library in your Blackboard Course. You can also add specific videos directly to your Blackboard course
  2. Student-created content will be placed into a course-assignment folder. Your instructor will provide instructions for sharing or submitting the content in an assignment.
