Resetting your Microsoft App Password for Use with Multi-Factor Authentication (How-to)

After you confirm multi-factor authentication in Microsoft Outlook online (O365), you are given an app password. If you forget to note that password, you can reset it by following the steps below.

1. My Accounts

  1. Log into Microsoft Outlook online at and go to My accounts in the upper right corner.
  2. Select View account.

2. Security & Privacy

You will need to go to the the Security & privacy section. You can either click on:

  1. Manage security & privacy in the upper right tile or
  2. Security & privacy in the left-hand menu.

3. Additional Security Verification

  1. Select Additional security verification.

4. Update

  1. Click on Update your phone numbers used for account security.

At this point you have two options. You can either:

  1. Click App Passwords. NOTE: The fact that this is a link is not especially clear as it looks nearly identical to the Additional security verification text to the left. (further instructions continue below) or
  2. Download the Authenticator app. Instructions on using the app can be found at

6. Create a New Password

  1. Click create.

7. Name your Password

  1. Enter a Name for your new password in the pop-up window.
  2. Click next.

8. Your New App Password

  1. Your new Password will be indicated here.
  2. This is the ONLY time your password will be displayed.
  3. You can copy password to clipboard.
  4. Once you've noted your new password, click close to leave the pop-up window.
