Using the Self-Service Laptop Kiosk (How-to)

Students, faculty, and staff can now borrow one of 14 Macbook laptop computers to use for up to four hours for FREE via the self service laptop kiosk located in the front lobby of Meredith Hall.

1. Borrowing a Laptop

  1. Touch the screen to activate the kiosk.

  2. Touch Check Out.
    Check out button
  3. Review the agreement and touch I Accept.
    Accept the borrowing agreement
  4. Place your Drake ID card under the reader to scan your bar code.

  5. Once your account has been verified, you will hear an audible click and the LED light above the computer that has been assigned to you will begin to blink. You can now remove the laptop.

2. Returning a Laptop

When returning the laptop, simply slide the computer into any open slot. The kiosk will register the computer as being returned. 

3. Using a Laptop

To use the laptop, click on the guest account. You do not log in with your Drake credentials. The guest account will automatically connect to the campus network.

No information will be saved on the laptop from use to use. Any work saved to the device will be erased upon logging out from the guest account or returning the laptop to the kiosk. To save work, you must use a cloud storage service like OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox.

NOTE: Although system preferences have been disabled for users, all function keys to adjust screen brightness and control volume and window placement can be used.

The laptops have been loaded with applications including:

  • Chrome, Firefox, and Safari web browsers
  • Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Spss
  • Citrix Receiver
  • Panopto
  • Sharelink (for wireless display connection)
  • Fetch

To report any issues with the checkout laptop, call the support center at 515-271-3001. Let them know what issues you were experiencing, the time you had the laptop checked out and the number of the laptop (located on the underside of the laptop) you were using. ​​​​​​
