Connecting to a Wired Port On-Campus Using a Windows Computer (How-to)

Below are instructions for connecting to a wired network port from on-campus.

For on-campus residents: Before you can connect your Windows computer to a wired port in your residence hall, you will need to have put in a request for a Wired Network Issue. Wired ports are not activated in residence halls by default.

Enable 802.1X Authentication in Windows 10 and 11

NOTE: The screenshots and text were written for Windows 10, however they also apply to Windows 11. The dialog boxes and settings locations are largely the same in Windows 11.

Search for Services

1. Click Start.
2. Type Services.
3. You can either right-click Services or select Run as administrator in the right pane.
4. If you went through the Services link, then click Run as administrator.

NOTE: Faculty and staff will need to gain temporary administrative access to their computers by following the instructions at Obtaining Temporary Admin Access on a Windows Computer (How-to).

Wired Autoconfig Properties (Local Computer) 

1. Make sure Startup type is set to Automatic.
2. Click Start.
3. Click OK.

 

Ethernet settings 

1. From the Windows Settings menu, you need to go to Network & Internet.
2. From the left menu, select Ethernet.
3. Under Related settings, select Change adapter options.

 

Network connections

1. Right click Ethernet, or whichever connection represents the wired network connection.
2. Select Properties.

 

Ethernet properties

1. Ensure Enable IEEE 802.1X authentication is checked.
2. Click Settings next to Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP).

 

Protected PEAP properties

1. In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities section, find AAA Certificate Services and click the checkbox next to it.
2. Click Configure next to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).

 

EAP MSCHAPv2 properties

1. Ensure Automatically use my Windows logon name and password is NOT checked.
2. Click OK.

3. Return to the protected PEAP properties, click OK.

4. Return to the ethernet properties and select Additional Settings.

 

802.1x advanced settings

1. Ensure Specify authentication mode is checked.
2. Ensure User or computer authentication is selected.
3. Click Save credentials.

 

Windows security credentials

1. Enter Drake email address as User name.
2. Enter Drake Password.
3. Click OK. You will then need to back out of the menus to close them out.
