Private Virtual Office Hours (Best Practices)

Both Zoom and Class Collaborate can be used to set up private virtual office hours. Below are some things to consider and links to instructions.

Privacy Concerns

In both Zoom and Collaborate, consider posting access links to the office hours inside Blackboard Learn instead of emailing links to students directly or posting them publicly. This will ensure that your office hours aren't crashed by anyone who shouldn't be there.

Setting up space

Make sure there is a main room and a separate private space for one-on-one or small-group consultation. Breakout rooms work well for the private space.

It is best to customize an uploaded file/message students see as they wait to meet with you in the main waiting room. The breakout room would be used for confidential conversations, private meeting room, or “office.”

NOTE: If you’re using Collaborate , you will need to provide guest links to any students not enrolled in the course where you created the office-hours meeting space.
