Forgetting a Wireless Network (How-to)

In this article you will find step-by-step instructions on how to forget a wireless network on Windows computers, Mac computers or iPhones. This is an important step to take when troubleshooting wireless network issues with incorrect configuration or authentication information.


For Windows 10 Computers

  1. Click on the Network icon in the lower right corner of the screen.

  1. Click on Network & Internet Settings.

  1. Select Wifi.

  1. Select Manage known networks.

  1. Find the wireless network you want to forget in the list (in this example, that's eduroam), and click Forget.

For Windows 11 Computers

  1. In the Start Menu, open the Settings app.

  1. In the left pane, click Network & internet
  2. In the right pane, click Wi-Fi

  1. In the right pane, click Manage known networks

  1. In the right pane, find the SSID of the network you wish to forget. Click the Forget button next to that name. Note that you may see a long list and may have to scroll to find the network you wish to forget.

  1. Confirm if needed.

For Mac (Pre Mac OS 13/Ventura) Computers

NOTE: You need to get temporary administrative access in order to make this change. Please follow the instructions at Obtaining Temporary Admin Access on a Mac (How-to) before following the below instructions.

  1. Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of the screen.

  1. Go to System Preferences in the drop down menu.

  1. Click the Network icon.

  1. Make sure Wi-Fi is selected in the left panel.
  2. Click the Advanced… button.

  1. Find the wireless network you want to forget in the Preferred Networks list and make sure it’s highlighted 
  2. Select the - (minus) button to remove the network.
  3. Click OK.

  1. Click Apply.

For Mac (Mac OS 13/Ventura or newer) Computers

  1. Open System Settings from the Apple Menu or from the dock icon.

  1. In the left pane, click Wi-Fi
  2. In the right pane, find the wireless network name under Known Network. Click the icon with 3 horizontal dots inside a circle for a drop-down menu.
  3. In the new menu, click Forget This Network...

  1. Confrm if needed.

For iPhones

  1. Open Settings on iPhone.

  1. Tap on Wi-Fi.

  1. Find the network you want to forget and tap the i on the right of it.

For Android Phones

NOTE: Because there are different Android phone manufacturers that may put some options in different places, specific directions may only apply to one or a few models of phones.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Find the Wi-Fi network connections
  3. Find the wireless network you wish to forget and tap it once, or tap a gear icon next to it
  4. At the bottom of the screen, find a Forget button and tap it
  5. Confirm if necessary
