Setting Up Blackboard Portfolios for Instructors/Leaders (How-to)

What Are Portfolios?

Portfolios are an invaluable tool in academic and professional development. They provide a powerful medium for users to efficiently collect and organize artifacts representative of work completed over time. Portfolios offer a means to demonstrate formative and/or summative progress and achievement. Portfolio authors are empowered with tools to effectively present their information in a cohesive, personalized format.

Administrators can create templates for portfolios. Portfolio templates define the structure and style of portfolios, leaving it to users to populate the portfolio with appropriate artifacts. Templates are useful for applying a standard structure to ensure that user portfolios meet the educational goals for the portfolio.

When creating portfolios, users can select a previously designed template so they have a starting point.

Are You Ready to Build an Portfolio Template?

Do you have the instructions for creating the portfolio outlined? The creation of a portfolio template requires that you have already done the design of what items should be included in the Portfolio. Please submit your outline to the LMS system administrator by scheduling a Blackboard Consultation to help you develop the template in Blackboard.

Portfolio Recipient Preparation: Availability on User Directory

  2. Select Privacy Settings.
  3. Either choose Anyone in my courses or Administrators and anyone in my courses.
  4. Submit.
Provide Users Instructions for Portfolio Completion

Please include instructions when informing your portfolio users of how to complete Portfolio projects

Provide Instructions for Sharing or Submitting Portfolio Snapshots

Students are Required to use the My Portfolio Page to Share with Reviewers

  • If the recipient has made themselves discoverable in the User Directory, users can share Portfolios to Users.
  • If the recipient has not made themselves discoverable or is outside of the university, users can share Portfolios to External users which generates and email to the recipient, but does not allow the recipient to keep a copy of the snapshot in their Shared with Me file location of the Portfolios.
  • Users will need to know which options for sharing to be used for Portfolios for coursework or other institutional requirements. Please review the Sharing Instructions and Options and provide information to your Portfolio users.

Students are Required to use a Course Assignment for Submission

When creating the assignment in Blackboard, Edit the assignment and adjust the Submission Details to receive a Portfolio Submission. This will require students to submit a portfolio as a response to this assignment.
