This article provides instructions on how to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app as your primary method of multi-factor authentication for accessing Drake systems securely. You'll want to be at your computer with your phone handy before starting this process. If you'd rather receive text messages or calls to confirm your identity instead of using the Microsoft Authenticator app, follow the instructions at Getting Started Using Text Messages or Phone Calls for Multi-Factor Authentication (How-to) instead.
Please see Clearing your Multi-Factor Authentication Settings (How-to) for instructions on clearing your registered methods and re-registering new ones if you get a new device or lose your phone.
NOTE: The screenshots are from an iPhone, but the process is similar for Android users.
1. Log in to your Drake account
- Log into a service that would require the use of multi-factor authentication (MFA), such as myDrake or your Outlook email.
- After signing in with your Drake email and password, you will be presented with a screen notifying you that you must set up multi-factor authentication. Click Next at this screen.
- You will now see a prompt to download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device. When you get to this step, stop here and go to step 2, where you will install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone.
2. Install Microsoft Authenticator on your phone
- Go to the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android) and search for Microsoft Authenticator. Before downloading, ensure that the app icon looks like the one below, and the developer is listed as Microsoft Corporation.
- Open the app on your phone.
- You will be brought to the below privacy screen. At this screen, click Accept to continue.
- At the "Help us improve Microsoft Authenticator" screen, click Continue. NOTE: Reporting usage data is voluntary, and is disabled by default.
- At the Sign In screen, select Add Work or School account.
- When prompted, select Scan QR Code as the option.
- You are now ready to continue on to step 3, where you will set up Microsoft Authenticator with your Drake account.
3. Set up MFA Methods
Now that you have downloaded and installed Microsoft Authenticator on your phone, you may go back to your computer for the next steps.
1. Scan QR Code
- You should still be on the Start by getting the app screen on your computer. Click Next to continue.
- At the Set up your account screen, click Next.
- Scan the QR code displayed on screen with your phone. NOTE: You will need to allow the Microsoft Authenticator app to access your camera and send notifications on your phone.
- Your Drake account should now be displayed on your phone's screen.
2. Test the Microsoft Authenticator app
Once you have scanned the QR code using your phone, you will be brought to the Let's Try it out screen on your computer. From here, a test notification will be sent to your phone with a number you will need to enter in on your phone to verify your identity.
- At the Let's try it out screen on your computer, a number will be displayed. In the Enter number here box on your phone, type in this number.
- On your phone, tap Yes.
- You'll then see the Notification Approved screen on your computer. Click Next.
- Microsoft Authenticator is now set up as your primary MFA method.
