What to Do Before and After You Get a New Computer (FAQ)

When your new computer has been ordered through the computer replacement process, please review the tasks listed below that should be performed before and after you receive it to ensure you have a smooth transition. If you run into issues or need assistance with any of these tasks, please submit a support request via the ITS Service Portal.

You can track the status of your computer delivery via your Computer Purchase Request.


1. Before you receive your new computer:

Back up your browser bookmarks:

Before returning your current computer to ITS, back up your web browser's bookmarks using the instructions linked below so they can be imported to your new computer.
If instructions for your preferred web browser are not listed below, please perform a Google search to find the proper instructions for backing up your browser's bookmarks.

NOTE: If you use Google Chrome (with a Google account) or Mozilla Firefox (with a Firefox account), your synced bookmarks will sync to Chrome/Firefox on your new computer after you sign into your Chrome/Firefox account.

Make sure your files and folders are synced to OneDrive:

Only files and folders synced to OneDrive will be automatically available on your new computer, To ensure your files and folders sync to your new computer, make sure you have successfully synced all your files and folders on your current computer to OneDrive.

Information on using OneDrive:

NOTE: If you have any additional personal files or files housed in non-supported applications (like Dropbox or Box), you are responsible for saving those files from your current computer and moving them to your new computer.

Make a software list

Be sure to let the campus technician working with you know what software will need to be installed on your new computer.This is especially important for specialized department-specific software.


2. After you receive your new computer:

Connect to the eduroam wireless network:

Connect your new computer to the eduroam wireless network. You will need to use your Drake email address and password to sign in.

Install any needed software:

Install (or connect to) any needed software. You will need temporary administrator privileges to make changes/updates to your new computer. For instructions on how to grant yourself this kind of access, please follow the instructions linked below for your type of computer.

Reconnect any shared calendars:

To reconnect shared calendars in Microsoft Outlook, please follow the instructions linked below.

Import your browser bookmarks:

Import your browser bookmarks by using the instructions linked below.
If instructions for your preferred web browser are not linked below, please perform a Google search to find the proper instructions for your preferred web browser.
